3D technology - the next industrial revolution

As schools across the country are beginning to prepare children for what some have called "the next industrial revolution" by assimilating 3D printing technology into their curriculum, toy manufacturing giant Hasbro is planning to incorporate the technology into kids' playtime. Creating digital art via touch

Touch screens aren't the only way of doing this. Shillito is leading a team that has developed software that allows artists to receive physical feedback when designing virtual 3D objects.

The team's approach uses a haptic device called Falcon, which vibrates and moves to allow users to "feel" virtual objects. Originally developed for 3D gaming, Falcon is a cross between a joystick and a mouse. As the user moves the controller in three dimensions, its movements are mirrored by a cursor on the computer screen. When the cursor interacts with objects in its 3D virtual environment, the tiny motors in the device provide resistance and small vibrations to give feedback about various properties of the virtual object being designed, such as its weight, texture and shape. "What we have is the sensation of touch, and because this is so natural to our way of interacting in the real world, it means you can tap into the tacit knowledge we have of 3D objects," Shillito says.

Free program certificate -- Teaching and Learning in MultiUser Virtual Enviroments

The European funded MUVEnation project has just launched ‘Teaching and learning with MUVEs’. This is a one year postgraduate programme, delivered online, for future and in-service teachers who want to use innovative methods and tools to address learners motivation and participation issues in compulsory education. What impact can 3D virtual worlds, such as Second Life, really have on our learning and teaching settings?

The course is free, but there are only 80 places. Participants will receive a formal letter or certificate of completion from their assigned institution For a full overview of the programme description and objectives please visit. Google goes 3D?

Okay, not quite... at least, not yet. ;-)

Google has entered yet another space with the launch of Lively, a tool for creating 3D social spaces on Web sites, which is now available in a public beta test.

The platform lets users create and personalize their own character, so-called avatars, and their own rooms, which is nothing new: Second Life does as much. But a key feature of the Lively platform is integration with the regular Internet. Users are able to create a room, and embed it with their web site or blog, writes Niniane Wang, Engineering Manager at Google, on the company blog.



Well, that sounds interesting, although unlike smallworlds, there is still software to be downloaded and installed. I wonder which virtual world will topple SecondLife, though?

new stuff popping up everywhere...

First off, stumbled across springshare which is web 2.0 apps for libraries. I guess it's about time someone created library specific applications to sell back to the library community. Of course, for some libraries with small budgets or suffering budget woes, opensource products or free stuff (del.icio.us) may be the only option. I'm not sure my library could afford to purchase this, if we were so inclined. It would be interesting to see how it stacks up against opensource stuff, though.

Artists can join the one million masterpiece. I seem to remember a similar project involving collaborative advertisements...

Anyone can create a virtual slideshow for use on a website, blog, etc. If you flickr you already have a similar tool available, but still kind of neat.

...and under possibly the most useful of all of these, powcne, a way to virtually share about anything electronically.
