In the recent OCLC Report, "Sharing Privacy and Trust in Our Networked World", one of the comments in the conclusion is "Many U.S. library directors are simply not engaged in the socialization of the web....less than a quarter..." *
Some may have dabbled or made sincere efforts into using new Web 2.0 tools, but didn’t have a clear goal in creating them, much like learning carpentry and building a house without knowing to consider aesthetic considerations like window placement and interior
lighting.
Here's an opportunity for those directors, and other library workers and students, to see how the social web works, and has value, strictly along the lines of professional development.
I'm doing a free 1 hour "Webinar" for Webjunction in one week. "10 Ways to Make Your Library Great in 2008, using Web 2.0 will go over how to use and del.icio.us to present and share print and web resources dealing with the 10 themes (or New Year resolutions) and show how to gather more. It takes place at 2:00pm ET on Wednesday, January 16. I'll be speaking and running a slide show, and there'll be a blog associated with it with more resources and commentary, as well as a place for folks to share other resourcesand ideas. The presentation will be archived if you can't make it live, and the blog will be ongoing.
It's an opportunity for professional development and to learn how to share resources. By the end of the hour, everyone will be able to see how easy it is to share their favorite books and web sites about libraries and the issues we face today.
Handling conflict and noise, developing partnerships, creating great programming, all are terrific New Years resolutions that can be supported not only with resolve, but with the right advice, and that is where the tools can really shine!
